General
ChickenDuck is a language learning tool that transcribes your tutoring sessions in real-time and helps you build vocabulary through AI-powered suggestions and spaced repetition flashcards. It works with Chinese-English learning in both directions.
鸡同鸭讲 (jī tóng yā jiǎng) is a Chinese idiom meaning "chicken and duck talking" — when two people can't understand each other. Our mission is to help you break through that barrier and achieve true language comprehension.
Currently, ChickenDuck supports Chinese (Mandarin) and English. The transcription works for both languages including code-switching (mixing languages in conversation). We plan to add more language pairs in the future.
ChickenDuck is designed to work with your existing tutoring sessions (on Zoom, Google Meet, Preply, italki etc.), but you can also use the flashcard system independently. The transcription feature requires a live conversation.
Technical Setup
ChickenDuck works best on Chrome and Edge. Safari and Firefox have limited support for screen audio capture. We recommend using Chrome for the best experience.
When you start a lesson, select "Share screen" or "Share tab" and make sure to check the "Share audio" option. This captures your tutor's voice from your video call.
Speaker identification is based on audio channels. If speakers are swapped, you can use the swap toggle in Settings to switch them. Make sure your microphone is your main audio input.
Make sure you checked "Share audio" when selecting your screen/tab. Also verify that your tutor's audio is playing through the shared source, not separate headphones.
Audio is processed in real-time for transcription and is not permanently stored. Only the text transcripts are saved to your account. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Features
Our AI analyzes your conversation and detects when you ask about new words or when your tutor explains vocabulary. These words are automatically added to your vocab queue for review.
Yes! All flashcard fields (Chinese, pinyin, English definition, example sentence) are editable. Click the edit button on any card to make changes.
Cards are scheduled based on how well you remember them. Easy cards appear less frequently, while difficult cards appear more often. This optimizes your study time for maximum retention.
Yes, flashcard export is available on all plans. Go to Flashcards → Browse → Export to download your cards. The export includes 4 fields (word, pinyin, definition, example sentence) which you can map to Anki's/Quizlet's fields when importing.
We support PDF files and common image formats (JPG, PNG). The AI extracts vocabulary from your documents and creates flashcard candidates for you to review. Text-based PDFs work best; scanned documents or image-heavy PDFs may have reduced accuracy.
